Every first-rounder from ‘09 to 2014 had already left town. The Browns cut one of them and traded another right before the 2017 season. But their trade of defensive tackle Danny Shelton to the Patriots on Saturday extends the scope of this achievement by one year.
The full rundown of those who have left:
- 2009: Alex Mack, center, 21st overall: Left in free agency after 2015.
- 2010: Joe Haden, cornerback, 7th overall: Cut in 2017.
- 2011: Phil Taylor, defensive tackle, 21st overall: Cut in 2015.
- 2012: Trent Richardson, running back, 3rd overall: Traded in 2013.
- 2012: Brandon Weeden, quarterback, 22nd overall: Cut in 2014.
- 2013: Barkevious Mingo, linebacker, 6th overall: Traded in 2016.
- 2014: Justin Gilbert, cornerback, 8th overall: Traded in 2016.
- 2014: Johnny Manziel, quarterback, 22nd overall: Cut in 2016.
- 2015: Danny Shelton, defensive tackle, 12th overall: Traded on Saturday.
- 2015: Cameron Erving, center, 19th overall: Traded in 2017.
The Browns have a new general manager, John Dorsey, who made exactly zero of these picks himself. He’s not bound to holding on to anybody. And to that point, there’s a chance the organization extends this streak again by parting ways with its 2016 first-rounder, too:
