There’s something not quite right with the 2-0 Kansas City Chiefs. The offense led by Patrick Mahomes and a brilliant cast of offensive playmakers looks great, but the defense is ... bad. One option to fix that sagging unit might be disgruntled Seattle Seahawks safety Earl Thomas.
Could Earl Thomas help the Chiefs’ sagging defense?
There’s a new team reportedly in the mix for the Seahawks safety.

The Chiefs are interested to some degree in trading for Thomas, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen.
Thomas held out during training camp and the preseason in an effort to get a new deal with Seattle or a trade. He’s on the last year of his current contract with the Seahawks.
Thomas has flirted openly with the idea of being dealt to the Cowboys. Last season, he openly asked online for the Cowboys to “come get me” when his time in Seattle ran out. He made even less of an effort to hide his wishes during this offseason.
Dallas offered a second-round pick, but that wasn’t enough for Seattle. The Seahawks wanted more. There had been rumors of other teams being interested in trading for Thomas, but this is the first time a legitimate partner other than the Cowboys has emerged from the rumor mill.
Thomas’ dalliances with Dallas have upset the Seahawks. He did return from his holdout before the season started and played in the first two games. Last week, however, he missed two practices for what was officially described as “personal reasons.” Now, the Seahawks are considering hitting Thomas with a hefty fine, according to the same EPSN. report.
Seattle is hosting the Cowboys on Sunday afternoon, and there’s hope that the meeting could spur new interest in a trade. Floating the Chiefs’ interest in Thomas could be a smart strategy to help gin up competition and possibly net the Seahawks a little more in return for the three-time All Pro safety.
The Chiefs defense could certainly use the help. They’ve giving up more than 400 yards passing in both of their games this season and an average of 32.5 points per game. They’re ranked dead last in defensive DVOA by Football Outsiders. For a team with championship designs, that’s a massive liability setting up the franchise for another January disappointment.
