The New York Giants got their first win of the season in Week 3. So did the Seattle Seahawks. The Lions went and beat the Patriots. And the Buffalo Bills pulled off the biggest upset the league has seen in more than two decades by toppling the Vikings in Minnesota.
Which team is the worst in the NFL right now?
There are three winless teams in the NFL and a handful of others that could be. But which one is absolutely the most hopeless of the bunch?

So with those bottom feeders rising up from the depths of the league, it’s fair to ask: who is the NFL’s worst team after three weeks?
Only three teams are still in the running to match Cleveland’s 0-16 record from a year ago. The Cardinals, Texans, and Raiders are all 0-3 with varying degrees of hope left in their 2018 seasons. Not far from their grasp (OK, pretty far from Arizona’s grasp) lie 14 one-win franchises, including a Cowboys team in complete disarray offensively.
That leaves plenty of candidates to take the reins and finish the year with 2019’s top draft position.
Arizona Cardinals (0-3)
Sam Bradford had a perfect passer rating through nearly two quarters against the Bears. He’d completed six of his first seven passes for 97 yards and a pair of touchdowns and actually looked like a player worth the $20 million the franchise paid to lure him from Minnesota.
And then the second half came, and Bradford turned the ball over three times to turn a 14-0 lead into a 16-14 defeat. The Cardinals have now scored 20 total points through three games while giving up 74. With few other threats on the roster, teams have been able to focus hard on David Johnson, reducing the 2016 All-Pro to a paltry 3.4 yards per carry in 2018. His longest run this fall went for just 11 yards.
Help could be on the horizon thanks to rookie quarterback Josh Rosen, but first-year head coach Steve Wilks doesn’t seem interested in giving him the tools he needs to thrive. Rosen made his NFL debut Sunday after Bradford’s third turnover and was tasked with leading his club back from a two-point deficit with 4:31 to play. Wilks made a tough situation even worse with some head-scratching playcalling that would have been difficult for a veteran to pull off, let alone a player making his first regular-season throws.
What could be Larry Fitzgerald’s final season with the Cardinals may also be the team’s worst. Arizona is the worst team in a bad NFC West, and certainly looks like the worst team in the NFL through three weeks.
A majority of NFL fans agree with Arizona as the worst team in the NFL right now.
According to SB Nation FanPulse (a survey of fans across the NFL powered by SurveyMonkey), almost 59 percent of more than 2,000 fans surveyed picked the Cardinals as the NFL’s worst team. The Raiders came in a distant second with 23 percent of the vote.
Oakland Raiders (0-3)
If football games were 30 minutes long, the Raiders wouldn’t be on this list. They haven’t trailed a single game at halftime. The problem is that there’s a second half, and the Raiders blew those early leads against the Rams, Broncos, and Dolphins in the first three weeks.
In the fourth quarter alone, the Raiders have been outscored, 37-3.
If there’s a reason for optimism, it’s that the three teams that pulled off come-from-behind wins against Oakland are collectively 8-1. They all appear to be contenders, and the Raiders did well against each for at least part of their matchups.
The down side is the defense can’t stop the run, it can’t rush the passer, and quarterback Derek Carr appears to be regressing badly. It doesn’t help that the Raiders hitched their trailer to Jon Gruden, who seems to be getting smoked every week by opposing coaches’ halftime adjustments, and has really only garnered attention by saying wacky things to the media.
There are easier games on the schedule ahead, but there’s still two games against the Kansas City Chiefs and even a Week 4 matchup against the Cleveland Browns suddenly doesn’t look like a breeze.
Houston Texans (0-3)
The Texans shouldn’t be the worst team in the NFL right now — and that might be why they are.
The Cardinals are rebuilding. The Raiders traded away their best player and have a roster made up of about 80 percent of players (rough estimate) who were in the NFL the last time Jon Gruden was a head coach a decade ago.
The Texans, though, have too much potential to be sitting in cellar of the NFL. J.J. Watt and Deshaun Watson are healthy again. Watt in particular is playing at a J.J. Watt kind of level. Watson hasn’t been quite as electric as he was as a rookie; he’s throwing picks at a higher rate and touchdowns at a lower rate. Yet even behind a cobbled-together offensive line that does him no favors, he’s still got that dynamic connection with receivers DeAndre Hopkins and Will Fuller, and those strong legs. Watson is also averaging 290 yards passing and 40 rushing yards per game — about 83 percent of their entire offense.
That hasn’t been enough for the Texans to break the NFL’s longest active losing streak, but they’ve had a chance to win each of their three games. What’s done them in is mistakes, especially in the red zone. Sometimes penalties have cost them a scoring opportunity. Other times it’s been a turnover or the play call. Right now, they’re averaging just 3.3 points per scoring opportunity, according to Bill Connelly’s data. That ranks 31st in the league behind the Browns, who at least have a win and a tie to show for this season.
It’s clear the Texans can win. They’re just wasting every chance they get, and some superstar talent along with it. That alone deserves the shame of being labeled the NFL’s worst team.
Dallas Cowboys (1-2)
Is Dak Prescott just Brock Osweiler? In Prescott’s last 13 games, he’s thrown for 2,396 passing yards with 10 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. In Osweiler’s last 13 games, he’s had 2,326 yards with 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
That’s not exactly a favorable comparison for a quarterback who was the toast of the league less than two years ago when he was named 2016 Offensive Rookie of the Year.
Ezekiel Elliott is trying to make the most out of his touches, but the Cowboys offense just doesn’t have much else going for it. Prescott hasn’t topped 200 passing yards since Week 15 of last season and the team doesn’t have many receiving options to get him back on track.
The defense has played well, but you can’t win in the NFL in 2018 if you can’t pass, and it’s hard to find any reason to believe the Cowboys are going to get their aerial attack together.
