Prop bets to consider if you think the Rams will win big in Super Bowl 53

Most bettors are backing the Patriots, but what if the Rams’ offensive and defensive talent gel at the right moment?

The New England Patriots are modest 2.5-point favorites over the Los Angeles Rams for Super Bowl 53. Money is coming in heavily on the Patriots, and I don’t think anybody would be surprised to see them walk away with their sixth Lombardi Trophy.

However, this Rams team is no push over. They were the last unbeaten team in the league, and have as a solid a combination of offensive and defensive talent as anybody in the league. They’ve struggled with consistency, particularly in defending the run, but the talent is there. If they could put it all together on Sunday, they could very well win Super Bowl 53 going away.

If you think that is doing to happen, there are numerous ways you can cash in beyond just the point spread. There are hundreds of prop bets to consider for Super Bowl 53. We’ll hear plenty about the coin flip or the national anthem or the halftime show betting options, but if you want to focus on football, here are prop bets to consider if you think the Rams are going to stun the Patriots in epic fashion. The odds are from Betonline.ag, unless otherwise stated.

MVP

Quarterbacks have taken home the Super Bowl MVP hardware 29 of 52 games. As such, Jared Goff is the safe play at +250. But if you want to shake things up a bit, Aaron Donald is the best “sleeper” play at 16-1. Donald for Super Bowl MVP is a fairly square sleeper, but if the Rams give the Patriots trouble, I have a feeling he will have a monster day. Tom Brady’s offensive line has been huge for him in the playoffs, so if that changes, Donald would likely be the won feasting.

If you want to mix and match a few options to cover yourself, Todd Gurley (10-1) and C.J. Anderson (22-1) as dual additions hold some value.

About Todd Gurley...

He is not on the injury report, but the perception is that there is some kind of injury issue involved. Given that this is the final game of the season regardless of result and Gurley has had the bye week, maybe he’s good to go. If you think the Rams are going to roll in this one, you likely want to bet more on Gurley than Anderson. You can get him at +250 to lead the game in rushing yards, +275 to score the Rams’ first touchdown and +400 to score the most touchdowns. If he is healthy, I really like this last prop bet as he had six games with two or more touchdowns this season.

Quarterbacks

Outside of an atrocious performance against the Chicago Bears, Jared Goff has done mostly solid work protecting the ball. If the Rams are going to roll through the Patriots, we might see some unusual troubles for Tom Brady. If the Rams are going to win big, you should jump on Tom Brady throwing the first interception between the two quarterbacks. BetOnline offers +125 odds on that, while Bovada offers it at even money.

The Rams have a high-flying passing game, but I suspect a blowout would see more big plays in the air than the Rams chewing up passing yards over longer drives. Bovada offers 37.0 passing attempts as the over/under for Goff. I’d take the under if I think the Rams are going to win big. That being said, I’d lean the over on 289.5 passing yards.

Random tight ends

The Rams’ offense is built around their ground game and their wide receivers. And yet, their tight ends are worth a look on Super Bowl Sunday. Bovada has installed Gerald Everett’s receptions at 2.5 and receiving yards at 24.5, and Tyler Higbee’s receptions at 2.5 and receiving yards at 21.5.

I’m not a big fan of the over on their receptions, but both have surpassed those receiving yardage totals several times in recent weeks. Everett had 50 receiving yards on two receptions in the NFC title game, and had at least 28 yards in each of Weeks 14, 15, and 16. Higbee had 25 yards in the NFC title game, 28 in the Divisional Round, and 36 in Week 17. Everett is likely to get more targets, but Higbee is quietly productive each week. Higbee is worth a bet on his over no matter what, while Everett is worth a bet on his over if you want to get a little greedy.

Defensive performance

The Rams’ defense would show up in a big way if LA rolled the Patriots. In such an instance, I would take the over on 1.5 team sacks for the Rams, and Patriots to commit the first turnover. I would also suggest getting on the under for the Patriots’ team total (29.5 points).

In terms of turnovers, like with our look at Patriots who might get an interception, you can find some potential value hitting on all four Rams’ defensive backs listed at Bovada. Given Brady’s ball-protection in the playoffs, the odds are longer for interceptions. But if you put a few bucks each on Aqib Talib (+450), John Johnson III (+450), Marcus Peters (+475), and Lamarcus Joyner (+600), you could score a modest victory even if just one of them intercepts a pass.
