The over is the safer National Anthem bet for Super Bowl 53

One of the more popular prop bets each year is the time of the National Anthem. Gladys Knight will be singing the Anthem before Super Bowl 53, and you can bet on whether she will sing it longer or shorter than 1 minute, 50 seconds.

The over is currently getting more money, and that has resulted in a sizable swing. When the line is first dropped, usually the odds are even on both sides. It changes over the course of the two weeks leading up to the Super Bowl, and this year is no different. Heading into game day, BetOnline has the over a sizable favorite at -190 (bet $190 to win $100). The under is sitting at +145 (bet $100 to win $145).

Recent history suggests the over on this one is the bet. Last year, P!nk came in at 1:53, and that was the shortest time since Kelly Clarkson clocked in at 1:34 at Super Bowl 46. There is one recording on record of Knight singing the Anthem, and she came in at 1:32. It seems unlikely she comes in that slowly, even if age slows her lungs a bit.

The best analysis of this prop bet is from FiveThirtyEight’s Josh Hermsmeyer. He took a look at Super Bowl National Anthem performances, and then broke down 31 covers Knight has performed over the years to see how much time she added or took away in her rendition of a song. The results suggest the over is the safer wager.

Bettors do not have to bet on every single prop bet available. I don’t think -190 is a particularly valuable price to get on the over. I’m intrigued by the under, but in reality I might save my money for some other options.

If you’re looking for some other Anthem-related prop bets, BetOnline offers ten more along with the total time.
