Editor’s update: It’s a record! The New England Patriots beat the Los Angeles Rams 13-3 making Super Bowl 53 the lowest-scoring game in Super Bowl history. Congrats to the Patriots and Rams.
What is the lowest-scoring Super Bowl in NFL history?
The record-holding game was a historic win for the Miami Dolphins. We now have a new record.

Super Bowl 53 has been a snoozer thus far, and it is currently on pace to be the lowest scoring Super Bowl in the history. The New England Patriots and Los Angeles Rams are tied 3-3 in the fourth quarter, and neither offense is getting anything going.
The lowest scoring Super Bowl was in 1973 when the Miami Dolphins beat Washington 14-7 in Super Bowl 7. The Dolphins scored touchdowns in the first and second quarters, and survived a late blocked field goal for the win. Miami had a shutout in their sights, before Bill Brundige blocked a field goal attempt with 2:38 to go. Kicker Garo Yepremian recovered the block but fumbled it. Mike Bass recovered and ran 49 yards for the touchdown. Washington got a stop on the ensuing Dolphins drive, but could get nothing going and Billy Kilmer was sacked as time expired.
The only reason Super Bowl 7 is notable is because the Dolphins’ victory improved them to 17-0. They are the only team to finish an entire season undefeated.
