The Arizona Cardinals were mocked by many for hiring Kliff Kingsbury as head coach last offseason. Then they were mocked by even more people for taking quarterback Kyler Murray first overall in the draft a year after taking Josh Rosen 10th overall.
2020 NFL mock draft: CeeDee Lamb would give the Cardinals an embarrassment of riches at wide receiver
In the SB Nation NFL writers’ mock draft, Arizona adds to a position that has turned into a strength.

But the Cardinals had a relatively solid 2019, finishing 5-10-1 on the season. Kingsbury looked comfortable as an NFL head coach and the choice of Murray proved to be a good one.
Add on to that the trade for wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins this offseason, in what was an absolute fleecing of the Houston Texans.
With a solid foundation in place on offense, the Cardinals can continue climbing back out of the NFC West basement. That is, of course, if they nail a few picks in the 2020 NFL Draft. Seth Cox of Revenge of the Birds is here in the 2020 SB Nation NFL writers’ mock draft to try and help the Cardinals make the next step forward.
8. Arizona Cardinals: CeeDee Lamb, WR, Oklahoma
Cox: The Cardinals have invested a ton in the wide receiver corps by making it a focal point of the last two offseasons. With the idea of no trades allowed, Lamb will allow the strength of the Cardinals to become a nearly overwhelming advantage each week.
Adding an offensive lineman like Andrew Thomas or Jedrick Wills Jr. would help the offense. Adding a defensive lineman like Javon Kinlaw would help the defense. But both would still be far away from what Lamb could bring to the offense. It’s an unconventional way to build, but it is what would create the biggest advantage for the Cardinals immediately while they continue to get better with Murray and Kingsbury.
Analysis: Unconventional is probably the best way to describe adding Lamb to a wide receiver group that already includes Larry Fitzgerald, Hopkins, and Christian Kirk. If the trade for Hopkins didn’t happen, this would be a very good pick. But the amount of targets a first-round wide receiver would get with those three makes it hard to get behind. Even with Lamb’s history with Murray at Oklahoma.
That’s all especially true in a draft where the Cardinals need a right tackle, and there should be at least one good one staring them in the face. In this scenario, that is Alabama’s Jedrick Wills. If Murray can’t get the ball away, what good does having a loaded wide receiver group?
Top five remaining players:
- 7. Jerry Jeudy, WR, Alabama
- 9. Mekhi Becton, OT, Louisville
- 10. Jedrick Wills, OT, Alabama
- 12. Javon Kinlaw, DT, South Carolina
- 13. Henry Ruggs III, WR, Alabama
The final pick of the day will be up at 1 p.m. ET with Alfie Crow of Big Cat Country making the No. 9 pick for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
