Jared Goff is on something of a hot streak.

The last time the Detroit Lions quarterback walked off the field, he did so after throwing the NFL’s version of a perfect game. Goff completed all 18 of his passing attempts in Detroit’s Week 4 victory over the Seattle Seahawks, setting a new mark for passes in a single game without a completion. Goff broke a record held by Kurt Warner, who connected on all ten of his passes for the Arizona Cardinals against the Houston Texans back in 2005.

Dating back to Detroit’s Week 3 win over the Cardinals, Goff enters play on Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys having completed 19 straight passes, which puts him six shy of the NFL’s record of 25.

What might be more notable than Goff standing on the cusp of that accomplishment, but the four quarterbacks who currently share the record: Marcus Mariota, Philip Rivers, Nick Foles, and Ryan Tannehill.

Update: There will be no record, as Goff’s first pass attempt against the Cowboys fell incomplete.

His second, however, went for a big gain to Tim Patrick. A few plays later David Montgomery barreled into the end zone, giving the Lions an early 7-3 lead over the Cowboys.

Tannehill completed 25 consecutive passes over a two-game stretch in 2015, and Mariota also connected on 25 straight passes over two games in 2018. Both Foles and Rivers connected on 25 consecutive passes in games during the 2018 season, Foles against Washington, and Rivers against the Cardinals that season.

However, according to offensive coordinator Ben Johnson opening up Sunday’s game against Dallas with some easy throws for Goff is not “even on my thought process,” reported the Detroit Free Press this week.

“No,” said Johnson “We’re playing ball.”

However, given how Johnson describes his quarterback, that record might just come naturally.

“He knows exactly what we’re looking for,” Johnson said. “He knows what the bad looks are, too. He knows why each play’s being called and the premier look for that play, but he also knows what could give us some issues, and so just his general awareness of how to make things right now when I’m not timing things up quite right, it’s been really impressive.”
