Jared Goff got a game ball after Lions-Cowboys but immediately gave it away

Back in Week 4 Jared Goff threw the NFL’s version of a perfect game. Goff completed all 18 of his passing attempts in the Detroit Lions’ 42-29 win over the Seattle Seahawks. That outing set a new NFL record for completions in a single game without an incompletion, breaking a mark set back in 2005 by Kurt Warner. It was the kind of performance that you would expect merits a game ball from head coach Dan Campbell, but there was just one problem.

Campbell did not have the stats in front of him, and game balls after Seattle’s win went elsewhere. When asked about Goff’s perfect outing in his post-game press conference, Campbell had to make a tough admission.

“I just gave the game ball to somebody else, so I feel awful right now,” the Lions coach said after the win over Seattle.

The Lions were back in action on Sunday and blew out the Dallas Cowboys by a final score of 47-9. While Goff did not set a new NFL record for consecutive completions, missing on his first attempt of the game, he settled in and finished 18-of-25 for 315 yards and a touchdown. In the post-game locker room celebration Campbell was ready with some statistics and made sure Goff got a game ball, but there was a sudden twist.

Goff almost immediately gave it back to Campbell, calling the coach the “rock” of the team.

The vibes are off the charts right now in Detroit.
