The Philadelphia Eagles find themselves in an unexpectedly difficult matchup in Week 14. The Eagles are hosting the Carolina Panthers and find themselves in a back-and-forth matchup in the second half. The Panthers took a 16-14 lead after running back Chuba Hubbard punched in a one-yard score. The Eagles responded with an eight-play, 70-yard drive to take a 22-16 lead.

The Eagles will probably win this game, but they would see their chances at the No. 1 seed in the NFC take a big hit with a loss. If they suffered the stunning upset, they would still have a comfortable two-game lead on the Washington Commanders for the NFC East lead. A loss would not have them sweating their playoff chances.
On the other hand, someone in Las Vegas is already sweating this game in a big way. A sports bettor went into the Circa casino and put down a $3.1 million wager on the Eagles to win this game outright. He got -700 odds for the moneyline bet, which means it would pay out $442,857.14.
A payout of nearly half a million dollars is a sizable chunk of change, but on a $3.1 million bet it’s not exactly the sharpest of bets. The Eagles are clearly the better team, and they should win the game. However, the Panthers have been showing signs of life in recent weeks, with Bryce Young showing a resurgence after a midseason benching.
Why would someone place this kind of bet? If the person was trying to think one through, I would assume they saw the Panthers ranked No. 31 in rush defense DVOA and the Eagles playing at home. Saquon Barkley has been dominating all season and this would seem to be a juicy matchup for the Eagles rushing attack. I wouldn’t suggest this kind of bet given the odds, but if I had $3 million lying around, I suppose there is at least some kind of argument.
However, regardless of that, this is turning into a sweat for the bettor.
UPDATE: The Panthers failed to convert on 4th and 9 to extend the game, and the Eagles win 22-16, helping this bettor’s wager cash. He can sleep well tonight.
