Sunday Night Football played host to a critical AFC West matchup, as the 11-1 Kansas City Chiefs welcomed the Los Angeles Chargers to GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

But late in the second quarter, the Chargers and their fans were holding their collective breath as quarterback Justin Herbert limped off the field having suffered an apparent injury to his left leg.

The injury came on a 3rd-and-10 play, with Herbert attempting a throw downfield while rolling to his right. After a big collision with linebacker Nick Bolton the quarterback stayed down for an extended period, as trainers looked at his left leg.

You can see the play in question here:

Adding insult to injury there was a holding penalty on the play, costing the Chargers ten more yards.

Here is a replay of the hit from Bolton:

Taylor Heinicke came into the game for the next play, and his throw on 3rd and 20 fell incomplete, and the Chargers were forced to punt.

The Chiefs lead the game right now 6-0, but the focus is on Herbert’s status for the rest of the contest.

Update: Herbert returned to the game for the Chargers’ next possession, and Melissa Stark indicated that Herbert had taken a hit to his thigh but did not require any testing on the sideline.
