Aaron Rodgers out as Jets quarterback

The New York Jets experiment with Aaron Rodgers is over after two disappointing seasons. On Thursday the team announced what everyone saw coming: That Rodgers won’t return to the team in 2025.

The move comes after the team hired Aaron Glenn to be its new head coach, which naturally raised questions whether a new coaching staff with a different vision for the team had any room for Rodgers in it.

What was supposed to be a Super Bowl-winning formula ended up exploding in the Jets’ faces. Rodgers suffered a season-ending achilles injury to kick off 2023, then returned only to have his worst season in the NFL, throwing for 28 touchdowns, 11 interceptions — and a career low passer-rating of 90.5 as a starter.

The Jets did everything to mold a roster specially for Rodgers, signing comfort players from his time in Green Bay like Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb, as well as making a big trade for Davante Adams — all in an effort to make Rodgers work. It never did, and the end result was a 5-12 record, as well as head coach Robert Saleh being unfairly sacrificed at the quarterback’s altar.

It’s unclear whether or not Rodgers will land anywhere in the NFL, or if he’ll walk away from the game. Should Rodgers decide to enter free agency there’s a very good chance he will find a place to play, especially in light of a large number of teams needing QB help, paired with a severe lack of talent in the NFL Draft.

Meanwhile it’s time to turn to page for the Jets. The organization made a fantastic hire in landing Aaron Glenn, and he’ll look to bring the same kind of defensive aggressiveness to New York that he displayed in Detroit. At quarterback the team will likely simply look for someone to manage the game and not turn the ball over, at least until they find themselves in a spot to find a franchise QB of the future.
