Eagles-Cowboys suspended for inclement weather during NFL opener

The NFL Kickoff Game between the Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles has been a rather entertaining contest so far.

But fans will need to wait a bit to see the game conclude.

With a storm cell moving into the vicinity of Lincoln Financial Field, with lightning present, the league has suspended the game with just under five minutes remaining in the third quarter.

Update: the game is expected to resume at 11:30 p.m. ET.

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the area, noting that the storms “may produce severe conditions.” According to the latest forecast, thunderstorms are expected to conclude around 12:15 a.m.

The suspension comes on the heels of a fumble by Cowboys running back Miles Sanders as Dallas was threatening, with possession deep inside Eagles’ territory. The score at the time of the game being suspended was 24-20 in favor of the defending Super Bowl Champions. According to the NFL, the league believes that the weather will clear around 11:15 p.m., and once the area is clear the game will resume following a 12-minute warm-up period.

This suspension is another twist in what has also been a bizarre season opener, as Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter was ejected for spitting on Dak Prescott during an altercation just after kickoff during an injury timeout, and did not play a snap.
