NHL Draft 2012: Pittsburgh Penguins Selects Olli Maatta With No. 22 Pick

With the No. 22 pick of the 2012 NHL Draft, the Pittsburgh Penguins select Olli Maatta, a defenseman from the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League.

Maatta, a native of Jyvaskyla, Finland, led all rookie defenseman in the OHL with 32 points (5 goals and 27 points) in 58 games. He was selected to play for the Finnish national team at the 2012 World Junior Championships, but and injury in the first game kept him out of the rest of the tournament, adding him to the list of 2012 draft prospects who’ve suffered injury troubles this season. He did log ice time in six games during the 2011 World Junior Championships, where he became the first Finnish player to play for their World Junior team at the age of 16 since 1998. He’s also represented Finland at the World Under-18 Championship.

He was ranked No. 8 among all North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting and No. 10 overall by TSN.
