Capitals goaltender Michal Neuvirth played the entire first period, but he wasn’t in net to begin the second. He’s been replaced by Seymon Varlamov, and according to the CSN Washington broadcast, it’s a potential groin issue that he’s suffered through the may have flared up in the first period. Some others are saying that it could be some sort of stomach virus. We’ll likely know more after the game.
Capitals Vs. Flyers: Michal Neuvirth Injured, Leaves Game With Potential Groin Issue
It’s possible that it happened on Jeff Carter’s first period goal. Carter snuck around the back of the net and Neuvirth had to quickly shimmy across the crease from post-to-post. He didn’t look good making that lateral movement, and as a result, he wasn’t able to get across in time to stop Carter’s attempt. It’s the only goal so far in the game.
The goaltender change wasn’t announced to the Wells Fargo Center crowd or to the press box, and most people in attendance seem to still think that Neuvirth is in net. In fact, Jim Jackson and Keith Jones of the CSN Philly broadcast crew continued to call Varlamov by the wrong name for most of the first half of the second period.
