The second word came out that Ales Hemsky suffered a concussion in last night’s Oilers game, the speculation began. Who will replace the All-Star in Raleigh next week? Before we jump to that talk, though, an update on Hemsky’s condition from the Edmonton Journal:
Alex Hemsky Suffers Concussion, May Miss NHL All-Star Game; Who Will Replace Him?
Hemsky, who had one bolt down the right wing and almost scored in the first period, wasn’t available after the game. But the general NHL protocol is you have to stay out of the lineup at least a week if medical people deem you’ve had a concussion. Obviously, if he’s out longer than that, Hemsky’s first appearance in an NHL all-star game is in jeopardy. The game is in Raleigh, N.C., on Jan. 30.
The leading candidate to replace Hemsky on the All-Star roster seems to be Philadelphia Flyers forward Danny Briere. Locally, Flyers fans were outraged that Briere, the best offensive player on the East’s best team, wasn’t named to the team at the start.
Now, he might get his chance. He told reporters at practice Wednesday morning that he’d think about accepting an invitation to Raleigh as an injury replacement.
Other players that could miss the game include Sidney Crosby, out with a concussion of his own, and Jarome Iginla.
