RALEIGH -- The coaches have been assigned to teams for the 2011 NHL All-Star Game.
NHL All-Star Game 2011: Joel Quenneville To Coach Team Staal; Peter Laviolette, Alain Vigneault To Coach Team Lidstrom
Chicago Blackhawks head coach Joel Quenneville will be in charge of Team Staal, the hometown team led by Hurricanes captain Eric Staal, in Sunday’s game, Saturday’s skills competition and Friday’s All-Star Fantasy Draft. He’ll be joined by his assistant, Mike Haviland.
Philadelphia Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette and Vancouver Canucks head coach Alain Vigneault will run things on Team Lidstrom, led by future Hall-of-Fame defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom. The coaches were assigned to teams via coin flip on Friday afternoon.
The players will keep most of the autonomy during Friday’s draft process, but the coaches will be involved for the rest of the festivities. Quenneville has the honors based on his success last year as the coach of the Stanley Cup Champion Blackhawks. Laviolette and Vigneault earned the honor because their teams entered the midway point of the season with the best record in the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference, respectively.
