    2011 NHL All-Star Fantasy Draft: Eric Staal Selects ‘His Boy’ Cam Ward With First Pick

    This 2011 NHL All-Star Weekend obviously has a Carolina feel to it, so it was fitting when hometown captain Eric Staal’s team won the “puck toss” to earn the first overall pick in Friday’s All-Star Fantasy Draft. Sticking with the theme, of course, Staal took another hometown favorite with the first overall pick -- “his boy” Cam Ward.

    That “my boy” thing would be a theme for the first several picks of this draft. With the second pick, Team Nicklas Lidstrom stepped up to the podium and selected Tampa’s Steven Stamkos. Stamkos joined his boy Martin St. Louis, Lidstrom’s alternate captain.

    It isn’t just mass chaos at tonight’s NHL All-Star Fantasy Draft. There are actually quite a few rules to be followed, so let’s quickly break them down.

    For starters, each team already consists of three players. On Team Staal, captain Eric Staal is joined by alternate captains Mike Green and Ryan Kesler. On Team Lidstrom, captain Nicklas Lidstrom is joined by alternate captains Patrick Kane and Martin St. Louis.

    2011 NHL All-Star Fantasy Draft: Storylines And TV Information For Friday’s Unique Event

    RALEIGH -- When you think of North Carolina, the first thing that comes to mind certainly isn’t hockey or the NHL. But in this state’s capital city this weekend, hockey has completely taken over as the most prominent sport around. A lot of the excitement might have to do with the NHL’s brilliant change in format.

    Tonight at 8 p.m. Eastern, the NHL’s 42 All-Stars will gather in a room at the Raleigh Convention Center for the first ever All-Star Fantasy Draft. Cameras from TSN and Versus will join them and it will be a made-for-TV event, but at its core, it will feel like just another day out on the pond.
