Don Cherry has apologized for the controversial comments he made a little over a week ago, in which he called three former NHL enforcers “pukes” and “hypocrites” for their public stance on fighting in hockey today.

In his Coach’s Corner segment on CBC’s Hockey Night In Canada, the third such segment since making the original comments, Cherry said he was “wrong about a lot of things” regarding Chris Nilan, Stu Grimson and Jim Thomson. The full remarks, courtesy of CBC:
“I gotta admit I was wrong on a lot of things,” Cherry said. “Three enforcers, tough guys, my type of guys, I threw them under the bus, and I’m sorry about it. I really am.”
“Chris and Stu never said that they took drugs because they were enforcers in the National Hockey League,” Cherry said. “Also, they never said they wanted fighting out of the game, that’s for sure.”
“I was wrong on that, 100 per cent wrong. And when you’re wrong, you have to admit it.”
Cherry has made plenty of comments in his career that have pissed people off, most notably about players of European decent. But this instance was different, considering the three players threatened to file a lawsuit against Cherry and CBC.
Cherry had three chances to apologize before Saturday’s broadcast and did not, so it’s quite possible that there’s no coincidence there.
