Canucks Vs. Penguins Final Score: Vancouver Falls At Home In Shootout, 4-3

Marc-Andre Fleury stuffed both shots he saw in a shootout and the Pittsburgh Penguins downed the Vancouver Canucks on the NHL’s opening night, 3-3 (2-0). Fleury cast aside shots by Mikael Samuelsson and Alex Burrows in the shootout as Kris Letang and Evgeni Malkin each put away their attempts for the Penguins to earn the win after the score was tied at three to end regulation.

The Penguins scored first as James Neal found the back of the net on a power play to give Pittsburgh the lead in the first frame. Matt Cooke made it a two-goal advantage, scoring on a power play just over seven minutes later. Maxim Lapierre got one goal back for the Canucks just before the end of the period and Vancouver headed into the locker room down 2-1.

Cooke added another goal early in the second period, this time on a short-handed chance, giving the Penguins a 3-1 lead. Keith Ballard answered near the end of the second period and the Canucks entered the final 20 minutes down by just a goal. Daniel Sedin brought the Canucks back to level in the final period, forcing a shootout as neither team scored to close the frame.
