Thomas Vanek scored the first and last goals of the game, providing the book-ends to a 4-1 Buffalo Sabres win over the Anaheim Ducks on Friday in Helsinki. Vanek did his damage on the power play, giving the Sabres the lead in the first period, then putting the game out of reach in the second as his team rolled to a season-opening win.
Ducks Vs. Sabres Final Score: Thomas Vanek Scores Two In 4-1 Buffalo Win
The action was fast and furious in the first two periods, with all five goals scored in the first 40 minutes of the game. Vanek's power play goal came just over four minutes in, and Ville Leino made it a 2-0 lead just four minutes later. The score held and the Sabres had a two-goal advantage heading into the second frame.
Nate Guenin got one back for the Ducks, scoring first in the second period. But it was as close as Anaheim would get as Buffalo scored the final two goals of the game -- both in the second period -- to secure the 4-1 win.
