Joffrey Lupul scored three goals in the second period as the Toronto Maple Leafs put away the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday night, 5-3. Lupul’s three goals were part of a wild second 20 minutes that saw the Devils and Leafs combine for five goals. After eight goals in the first two periods, Wednesday’s matchup ended with a whimper as the third period came to a close without a goal by either side.

Joey Crabb gave the Maple Leafs the lead in the first period, breaking the scoreless tie. Dainius Zubrus answered back a few minutes later on a power play, knotting the matchup at one. Mikhail Grabovski scored the final goal of the frame to give the Maple Leafs the lead heading into intermission.
The second period was a back-and-forth battle, with Patrik Elias knotting the score at two for the Devils. Lupul scored the first of his three goals as Toronto reclaimed the lead, only to see David Clarkson answer back a few minutes later. But Lupul scored the final two goals of the period, bagging a hat trick and the win for the Maple Leafs.
