Following his game misconduct penalty for an illegal hit on Chicago Blackhawks defensemen Brent Seabrook, Calgary Flames forward Rene Bourque has been suspended for two games without pay by the NHL department of player safety. Bourque will forfeit just over $36,000.
Rene Bourque Suspended Two Games For Hit On Brent Seabrook
Rene Bourque has been suspended for two games following his game misconduct penalty for an illegal check on Brent Seabrook on Saturday.
Early in the first period of the game between the two teams on Sunday, Bourque checked Seabrook from behind and put Seabrook's head into the boards. Fortunately, Seabrook was not injured on the play. In his video explanation for the suspension, Brendan Shanahan says that Seabrook's lack of an injury factored into the length of the suspension, as usual.
As Shanahan explained, Bourque has not been disciplined to this point in his career. This is a truly nasty and dirty hit, the kind that would have produced a lengthy suspension if Seabrook sustained an injury or Borque had a history of dirty hits.
