Cam Ward was pulled a bit too late in Carolina's 7-6 loss to the Calgary Flames on Tuesday night, and when he exited the game with about eight minutes left in the third period, his team trailed by four goals, 6-2.
Hurricanes Goalie Mike Murphy Makes Unfortunate NHL History
Enter Mike Murphy, freshly called up from Charlotte of the AHL, making his NHL debut. The Hurricanes turned up the pressure and ultimately made the game close, so Murphy didn't face many shots, but he might just be the unluckiest dude in the world.
See, Murphy only faced two shots in his approximately 12 minutes of work, but thanks to his teams’ late comeback, the empty-net goal that the Flames scored at the 18:51 mark of the third period proved to be the game winner. That means that Murphy, who didn’t even allow a goal in his NHL debut, still gets stuck with the loss.
According to Hurricanes spokesman Mike Sundheim, via the Elias Sports Bureau, this is a first:
Poor guy.
