Staal was given a game misconduct and a match penalty for the punch which at the moment will garner an automatic one-game suspension and review from the league but Staal will most likely have the suspension lifted by the league. Prust sold the punch extremely well and while there has been a precedent set a few weeks ago by Atlanta’s Ben Eager, that punch was far more violent and had more intent behind it.
The Rangers scored on the ensuing powerplay to tie the game at three at the end of the second period. Ryan Callahan scored with 13 seconds left in the period with assists from Michael Del Zotto and Mats Zuccarello. It was Callahan’s first goal of the game. The game tying goal will ensure the Rangers with at least one point as the game has gone to overtime. The Rangers are five points behind the Penguins in the standings so the extra point will help in the chase for the playoffs.
