Mike Fisher Trade Difficult For Ottawa Senators, Fans

The trade of Mike Fisher, the 11-year Ottawa Senators veteran, might be necessary in the grand scheme of things for the organization. Things aren’t working out there right now and a rebuild is clearly in order. In order to rebuild, you have to make some difficult decisions, but ultimately, you become a better team as a result.

That doesn’t mean the Senators and their fans are taking this any easier today, though. One of those fans, Peter Raaymakers at SB Nation’s Silver Seven, talked about it:

This trade is likely to be a difficult one, at least initially, for Senators fans. Although much of the fanbase has said they’d support a rebuild through most of this season, that was just talk before; now, with one of the city’s favourite players dealt away as part of the rebuild, the reality should be sinking in for most of the city. But as a seller’s trade, it was a good one for the Senators.

He went on to explain that Fisher’s value is higher now than it will be at any point in the future, at least as far as the Senators are concerned given his contract situation and the team’s situation at present. The trade gives the Senators some much-needed cap space and a valuable pair of draft picks in the process.

That conditional 2012 draft pick coming back to Ottawa from Nashville improves if the Predators advance beyond one round of the postseason, so you can be sure that Senators fans will be rooting for their new friends in Music City this April, May and potentially June.

They’ll be rooting for their old friend Mike Fisher, too.
