Alexander Ovechkin scored on the Capitals third powerplay of the game off a rocket of a one-timer from Marcus Johansson to give the Capitals a 1-0 lead after two periods. Mike Knuble received the other assist on the goal. Other than that goal, the offense has been contained by the two goaltenders.

The Washington Capitals have found their offense after being held to seven shots in the first period. They outshot the Penguins 14-7 and are still being outshot 25-21 overall in the game. Michael Neuvirth is holding his own in the game, making all 25 saves in the game and making some key saves to preserve the shutout.
The Penguins have taken some penalties of their own after getting three powerplays in the first period. Matt Cooke took an interference penalty early in the second period while Joe Vitale took a tripping penalty late in the period that led to the Ovechkin goal.
The intensity of the game has ratcheted up and is expected to continue in the third period. Even if there isn’t a lot of scoring, the fireworks will sure be live in the third.
