Dallas Stars’ Asking Price In Potential Brad Richards Trade Is Reportedly Really, Really High

There’s no debate that Brad Richards is a really good hockey player, hence the trade rumors circling him and the Dallas Stars non-stop at this 2011 trade deadline.

There’s also no debate that Stars’ general manager Joe Nieuwendyk doesn’t want to get rid of his best player unless he gets a sizable return in a potential trade. At least, that’s what he said yesterday. What does he think a “good deal” consists of, though?

According to Larry Brooks of the New York Post, it’s a whole lot of crazy.

The Post has learned Nieuwendyk told Rangers GM Glen Sather on Tuesday that it would cost the Blueshirts three young studs off the roster, believed to be Marc Staal, Brandon Dubinsky and Derek Stepan, for the privilege of renting Brad Richards.

Yes, Brooks is correct. Richards is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. He’s a rental. He has a no-trade clause, too, so he’ll decide where he goes. To ask a team to sell basically their entire young core for a rental player is just... well, adjectives are tough to come by.

As Defending Big D said, “I know we all love Brad Richards, but if the Rangers even contemplated making such a deal then I would fly to Dallas and pack Richards myself.”
