Chris Phillips is staying in Ottawa. The veteran defenseman took his name out of trade rumors on Sunday night by signing a three-year contract extension with the Senators, the only club he’s played for in his 13-year NHL career.

Phillips had been the subject of trade rumors for weeks. He held a no-trade clause so he had the ability to dictate his own future, but there was the possibility that he could have waived that option to go to a playoff team. He’s undoubtedly taking a pay cut by staying in Ottawa, but considering he’s lived there since cracking the NHL in 1997.
