Chris Phillips Ends Trade Speculation, Signs 3-Year Deal With Ottawa Senators

It's not often that we see a player spend his entire career in one place, no matter the sport. Chris Phillips is the exception to the rule.

The defenseman signed a three-year contract with the Ottawa Senators on Sunday night as trade deadline speculation continued to heat up around the player and the only team he's known in his 13-year NHL career. It's a deal worth $9.25 million over the course of the deal, which works out to about $3 million per season, as reported by TSN, which also notes that Phillips holds a no-move clause in the new deal.

Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun first reported the news. He also reports this deadline eve that the signing of Phillips puts defensemen Filip Kuba and Chris Campoli in play on Monday, since the Sens now have six NHL defensemen under contract, plus several youngsters looking to get a shot and the restricted free agent Campoli.

Phillips had been the subject of trade rumors for weeks. He held a no-trade clause so he had the ability to dictate his own future, but there was the possibility that he could have waived that option to go to a playoff team. He’s undoubtedly taking a pay cut by staying in Ottawa, but considering he’s lived there since cracking the NHL in 1997.
