There are quite a few people out there, including myself, who hate the NHL’s charity point system. Wouldn’t it just make sense to go to a three point system, where winners in regulation earn three points, losers in regulation earn none, winners in overtime or the shootout earn two, and losers in the extra session earn one?
What Would Today’s NHL Standings Look Like With A 3-Point System?
It creates much more balance, of course, as every single game is worth the same amount of points. These days, when games go to overtime, more points are handed out. It’s a mess.
So what if today’s NHL standings were based off of a three point system?

The obvious thing to note is that all point records would clearly go out the window. 132 points with 14 games left to play for the Vancouver Canucks? Yeah, considering the current record is 132 points in an entire year, set by the 1976-77 Montreal Canadiens, that would go right out the window. This is one of the main issues people have with switching to a much more logical three-point system -- the records will disappear.
Hey, though. I don’t think the 76-77 Habs care about that record. They have their names on the Stanley Cup.
