The home-standing Philadelphia Flyers came out of the gate hard at Wells Fargo Center, but after several chances in the offensive end and a dominant edge in puck possession, one trip up the ice gave the Caps the edge where it matters most.
Capitals Vs. Flyers: Nicklas Backstrom Opens Scoring, Gives Washington 1-0 Lead
Nicklas Backstrom fired a shot at Sergei Bobrovsky that beat the Flyers’ rookie goaltender five-hole at the 7:52 mark of the first period. The Caps took a 1-0 lead and have stolen the momentum away from the orange and black in the process. The goal never should have gotten by Bobrovsky, but it’s the kind of goal he’s been known to give up about once every other game in his first NHL season.
Washington hopped on the power play on the shift following Backstrom’s goal thanks to a high-sticking call on Scott Hartnell, but that quickly ended when Claude Giroux was sticked in the face by Alex Semin about 1:20 later. The infraction drew blood and gave the Flyers over three minutes of power play time, but they spent most of that time dipsy-doing around the blueline with the puck.
