We can finally put the miraculous second half run of the New Jersey Devils on ice. With their 4-1 loss to the Boston Bruins on Tuesday night, the Devils have suddenly fallen into a hole they won't be able to climb out of with only nine games left in the regular season.
Devils Vs. Bruins: New Jersey’s Playoff Hopes Put On Ice After Another Loss
Ilya Kovalchuk opened the scoring for New Jersey 11 minutes into the first period with a power play tally, but to the chagrin of the visiting team and to the joy of the home fans at TD Garden, the Bruins would reel off the next four goals en route to the win.
Hoping for a miracle late, Martin Brodeur was pulled in favor of an extra attacker, but with 40 seconds left, the Devils' fate was sealed when Mark Recchi potted an empty netter. The Devils fell to 12th in the East with the loss and they'd now need to gain nine points in nine games just to catch eighth-place Buffalo. That's... not going to happen. The miraculous run is over.
For Boston, the win gave them a vital lift over the Montreal Canadiens, who fell 2-0 to the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday night. That stretches the Bruins lead in the Northeast Division, good for the 3rd seed in the East overall, to three points with two games in hand.
