And now, a little distance for the Washington Capitals. Alex Semin scored late in regulation and Alex Ovechkin scored in the shootout as the Caps topped their division rival Tampa Bay Lightning to move two points into the lead in the Southeast. We did say a little distance.
Capitals Vs. Lightning: Alex Ovechkin’s Shootout Goal Keeps Southeast Lead In Washington’s Hands
It’s the fifth straight win for the Caps, who were paced mostly by goaltender Braden Holtby, who came in at the start of the second period in relief of Michael Neuvirth. At one point in the first period, Neuvirth took a puck off the mask, and according to coach Bruce Boudreau after the game, some of the metal from the mask went into his eye. He’ll be fine.
Holtby completely shut the door on the Lightning, stopping 21 shots over the 40 minutes of action he saw. This save on Simon Gagne was perhaps his best of the night.
With five minutes left in the third, Alex Semin, who had played an eye-opening game to that point as it was, scored the tying goal. The teams fought to a scoreless overtime before Ovechkin danced around Dwayne Roloson and broke the water bottle for the lone shootout goal.
