Rangers Vs. Islanders: Should We Use The Word Collapse?

The New York Rangers are falling apart. Or, at least that’s what a fan will tell you.

After a stretch in which they went 8-1-1 to seemingly lock up a playoff spot, they've fallen off the map in their last two games. On Thursday night against the hated Islanders, they were embarrassed, 6-2, in a penalty-filled loss that saw former Ranger draft-pick Al Montoya make 25 saves against the team that picked him.

Vinny Prospal opened the scoring for the Rangers before the Islanders reeled off six straight goals from Blake Comeau, Radek Martinek, Jesse Joensuu, PA Parenteau, Matt Moulson and, yes, Trevor Gillies.

As a result, the door is sneaking open for the Carolina Hurricanes. The eighth-place Rangers sit just three points ahead of the Hurricanes and Carolina has one game in hand. Most importantly, one of those teams is playing well and the other clearly is not.

To say the Rangers are in trouble is an understatement.
