Blackhawks Vs. Canucks, Game 1: Roberto Luongo The Difference As Vancouver Holds 2-0 Lead
If both teams keep up this level of play, we could be in for a hell of a period of hockey. If the Blackhawks want to come away from this one with a 1-0 series lead, they’re going to need to pray that Luongo’s armor cracks. Right now, he’s without a doubt the difference.

The big question heading into Wednesday’s Game 1 between the Vancouver Canucks and Chicago Blackhawks was how the NHL’s No. 1 seed would respond against a team that’s had a bit of a hex on them for the last two playoff seasons. It’s apparent that the Canucks want that whole storyline to go out the window.
Vancouver controlled play in the first period, outshooting Chicago almost two to one and outscoring the Blackhawks, 2-0, on goals from Chris Higgins and Jannik Hansen. Higgins’ goal was originally credited to Ryan Kesler before a change during the first intermission.

You won’t find the Blackhawks complaining, though. They have plenty of reason to be confident heading into the series, as they’ve defeated the Canucks in the playoffs two years running. These aren’t the same teams, but there’s obviously a good deal of mental gamesmanship going on here.
Will that mental edge be enough for Chicago? The Canucks are stacked up and down the lineup this year, which you probably knew from one glance at the NHL standings, and now that they’re healthy on defense, there’s no indication that they’ll be letting up any time soon.
