The big question heading into Wednesday’s Game 1 between the Vancouver Canucks and Chicago Blackhawks was how the NHL’s No. 1 seed would respond against a team that’s had a bit of a hex on them for the last two playoff seasons. It’s apparent that the Canucks want that whole storyline to go out the window.
Blackhawks Vs. Canucks, Game 1: Vancouver Scores Twice In First, Takes Big Lead
Vancouver controlled play in the first period, outshooting Chicago almost two to one and outscoring the Blackhawks, 2-0, on goals from Chris Higgins and Jannik Hansen. Higgins’ goal was originally credited to Ryan Kesler before a change during the first intermission.
Chicago seemed to have a bit more jump at the start of the second period, helped along by a power play after a slashing penalty to Henrik Sedin. The Blackhawks seemed to get things together with the man advantage, rolling a few 5-on-4 scoring chances into some control at even strength.
Now, at the midway point of the second, the teams have traded blows a bit, but it doesn’t look like the domination that Vancouver displayed early on. The Canucks have clanked a few posts, and the Blackhawks can only hope to capitalize on those near misses.
