The Chicago Blackhawks and Vancouver Canucks got off to a wild as Brian Campbell was sent to the penalty box for cross-checking just 16 seconds into the game, putting Vancouver on the early power play. The Blackhawks dodged a bullet, but the action was just getting started, and Chicago came firing right back just a few minutes later with a flurry of its own. Two goals in 24 seconds just six minutes into the game gave the Blackhawks an early 2-0 advantage.

Tanner Glass gave the Blackhawks all the opening they needed after he was whistled for interference, putting Chicago on a power play of its own. With the man advantage, Chicago capitalized as Marian Hossa beat Luongo to give the Blackhawks a one-goal advantage. Duncan Keith and Corey Crawford were credited with the assists.
Chicago struck again like lightning as Marian Hossa beat Luongo 24 seconds later as the flurry of action saw the Blackhawks take a 2-0 lead at the snap of a finger. Luongo went low, Hossa went top-corner and Vancouver found itself in a early hole.
It was the power play coming back to bit Vancouver again midway through the period as Alexander Elder was sent to the box for tripping. Patrick Kane got in on the action with a power play goal, giving the Blackhawks a commanding 3-0 lead early.
The score held as intermission finally came, allowing the Canucks to head to the locker room in an effort to regroup down 3-0.
