The details weren’t all perfect, but back in October, guess what EA’s NHL 11 predicted for the 2011 Stanley Cup Final?
EA Sports Is Good At NHL Playoff Predictions, Selected Bruins Vs. Canucks Final
In the finals, it will take all seven games and a career performance from Conn Smythe Trophy winner Daniel Sedin for the Vancouver Canucks to defeat the Boston Bruins in front of an ecstatic crowd at Rogers Arena.
Yep.
Like I said, the details aren't perfect. EA had Vancouver defeated the Los Angeles Kings in the Western Conference Finals and the Bruins defeating the Washington Capitals in seven games to win the East. Boston did defeat Philadelphia according to EA's predictions, but in seven games in the first round, not four games in the second round.
The Chicago Blackhawks also lost in the first round and in seven games... but to the Kings, not the Canucks.
Things EA got epically wrong:
- Sidney Crosby didn't lead the league with 107 points.
- The New Jersey Devils had 81 points and finished in 11th place, not 102 points in 4th place in the East.
- There is literally no chance in the world that the 2010-11 St. Louis Blues could have defeated the 2010-11 Detroit Red Wings in Round 1 of the playoffs. Especially not in six games. And 6th place for the Blues? Yeah, alright.
- Buffalo: 47-32-3 for 95 points, fifth place in East. Boston: 45-32-4 for 97 points, third place in East. DOES NOT COMPUTE.
Things EA got creepily right:
- The potential Stanley Cup Final, which looks as though it’s leaning toward Vancouver vs. Boston (although definitely not certain just yet).
- Vancouver wins the President’s Trophy.
- The 2009-10 Stanley Cup prediction, accurately picking the Chicago Blackhawks to win the whole thing. Hm.
