Binghamton Senators Take Improbable Road To AHL’s Calder Cup Finals

The Binghamton Senators didn't have an easy go of things this year. Their parent club, the Ottawa Senators, had their worst season since the early-1990s and are in full rebuild mode. When such an organizational transformation begins, it obviously has an impact on the entire operation, and that includes the B-Sens.

As their season wound down, the NHL trade deadline approached as well, and the fire sale began. Ottawa stalwarts like Mike Fisher were shipped away for draft picks, and players in Binghamton had to head north to fill in the holes on the NHL club. The ripple effect was devastating in Binghamton.

Between February 26th and March 18th, the B-Sens went 2-8. They fell in the AHL’s Atlantic Division, and without a last-ditch six-game win streak late in the season, they very well could have missed the Calder Cup Playoffs altogether. They finished seven points up on Worcester for the Eastern Conference’s final playoff spot.

In the first round against the Manchester Monarchs, the Senators felt 3-1 in the series before reeling off three straight overtime wins, including two in Manchester, to advance to the Atlantic Division Finals. After wiping up Portland in six games, the Senators swept the Charlotte Checkers under the rug in a sweep. They outscored Charlotte 21-9 in the series.

And that’s where we are now. Binghamton, starting yet another series on the road, travels to Houston to take on the Aeros in Game 1 on Friday night. Can they slay yet another dragon?
