Brad Staubitz Suspended By NHL For Illegal Hit On Cody Bass

Brad Staubitz was suspended for the rest of the preseason and three regular season games for an illegal check from behind on Columbus forward Cody Bass.

The NHL has suspended Brad Staubitz for the remainder of the preseason and three regular season games for an illegal check from behind on Columbus' Cody Bass. NHL Senior Vice President of Player Safety Brendan Shanahan announced the suspension Monday night.

“As the video shows, Bass has his back turned to Staubitz well before contact is made,” Shanahan said.

In the video below, you can watch the hit and listen to Shanahan explain how he arrived at the decision to suspend the Wild forward.

The key is that while Bass was against the glass, Staubitz made no effort to avoid or minimize harm against a player in a defenseless position. Bass was driven into the glass and was injured as a result.

Staubitz was given a major penalty and game misconduct. He will lose $9,324.33 in salary during his suspension.
