In the wake of Wednesday's horrific tragedy in Russia, where an entire KHL team was killed when its plane crashed shortly after takeoff, there are a lot of "what ifs" surrounding the news. It's awkward and completely meaningless in comparison, but we'd be lying if we said the thought hadn't crossed our minds.
What If Tragedy Struck An NHL Team? A Look At Hockey’s Contingency Plan
What would the NHL do if a plane crash or some other disaster were to strike one of its clubs, rendering that team incapable of icing a roster?
They anticipate such an event in the league by-laws, it turns out, with what they call the “Emergency Rehabilition Plan.” Dirk Hoag over at SB Nation’s Nashville Predators blog, examined that plan and how it would be put into place in such a scenario. In most cases it would involve a draft.
We don’t know if the KHL, just founded in 2008, has such a plan. We’ll have to assume that they’ll come up with something similar in wake of the tragic loss of Lokomotiv club, if they don’t already have a plan.
All the major American sports leagues have such contingency plans in place. Hopefully we never have to see them implemented.
