New York Rangers Owner James Dolan Breaks Silence, Which Doesn’t Please John Tortorella

We think John Tortorella was kidding on Tuesday night when he basically called his employer a BSer, since doing such a thing would seem like a bad idea. But then again, this is John Tortorella, so it really could go either way.

Then again, perhaps Torts was actually shocked that New York Rangers owner James Dolan actually addressed the media, coming out of his cave and sharing his thoughts on the wonderful year the hockey club is having.

The audio of this exchange, via Rangers Report, is absolutely golden. It came during Torts’ post-game press conference, when he was unexpectedly joined by Dolan, who hasn’t spoken with the media in years.

DOLAN: I’m very proud of the organization. I’m particularly proud of Mr. Sather, because all the way back to 2004, when things weren’t going so well and we had a lot of free agents in here, and we decided to basically redo the strategy, Glen and I made a pact.

I actually gave him something, and I won’t reveal what it is today. But I gave him something to seal the pact and I said you can’t give it back to me until we win the Stanley Cup. And I think we’re pretty close to getting that thing back.

TORTS: Eaaaaasy, now...

DOLAN: For me, it’s all about the system that he built. Of course it’s great coaching, but it’s about the farm system and the scouting system and the development and going with the kids and sticking with that philosophy even when at times it didn’t look so good. I’m very proud of him and I’m very proud of the organization.

REPORTER: How much did you know about John when Glen came to you and said this is the guy?

DOLAN: I don’t think that Glen wanted to tell me anything about John.

[laughter]

TORTS: You wanna sit down now?

[laughter, Dolan leaves, press conference continues]

...

TORTS: We just have to go about our business. You know, I have my owner up here talking about a Stanley Cup. That’s a bunch of bullshit. [laughter] We have to take it one day at a time.
