Phoenix Coyotes forward Raffi Torres has been suspended for two games by the NHL Department of Player Safety. In a game played on December 31, Torres' delivered a check on Minnesota Wild defenseman Nate Prosser in which he made contact with Prosser's head. He left his feet to make the hit, which has been illegal for quite some time. Brendan Shanahan explains exactly why the check was illegal and why Torres is facing suspension.
Raffi Torres Suspended Two Games
Phoenix Coyotes forward Raffi Torres has been suspended for two games following an illegal hit to the head of Minnesota Wild defenseman Nate Prosser.
Torres is lucky that the referee missed the hit and that Prosser was not injured. If a penalty was assessed and Prosser had to leave the game for any period of time, Torres would likely be facing more than two games out. As Shanahan mentioned, Torres was warned and fined for a similar hit before this game, on the day of the Coyotes’ game against the Wild.
