With the NHL lockout officially at the one month mark, the American Hockey League has concluded its first weekend’s worth of games with the Springfield Falcons and Abbotsford Heat sitting atop the league’s conferences with 2-0 records.
2012 AHL standings: Springfield, Abbotsford hold top spots after opening weekend
An update of the AHL standings after the opening weekend of the regular season.
Springfield currently holds control of the Eastern Conference's top spot but have three teams behind them who also sit at 2-0 (including the Manchester Monarchs, Norfolk Admirals and Bridgeport Sound Tigers). In addition, the Syracuse Crunch and Binghamton Senators also remain undefeated, albeit through a single game.
Abbotsford also has company in the Western Conference standings as the Chicago Wolves and Texas Stars both remain undefeated through two games. The Charlotte Checkers, Milwaukee Admirals, and Hamilton Bulldogs were all able to earn victories in their season openers and currently possess 1-0 records.
Coming into the year, the Oklahoma City Barons were largely considered the No. 1 team in the AHL thanks to the addition of young stars from the Edmonton Oilers such as Jordan Eberle and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (in addition to top-college free agent signee, Justin Schultz). However, the Barons currently sit at 1-1 after splitting consecutive games against the Lake Erie Monsters. Eberle and Nugent-Hopkins were both held pointless, while Schultz registered a goal and an assist.
