KHL schedule 2012: Russian league begins 2-week break

The Kontinental Hockey League takes a two-week break due to the Karjala Tournament.

The Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) will begin a two-week break on Monday so that players can participate in the Karjala Tournament, which is an international event annually held in Finland.

The tournament includes participation from the Czech Republic, Finland, Russia and Sweden. It is part of the Euro Hockey Tour, which consists of four annual tournaments hosted by the four nations previously mentioned. The tour is a way for the nations to give their younger players experience in national competitions, in anticipation of larger events such as the World Championships or Olympics.

Russia has historically performed well in the Karajala, registering 13 medals since the tournament’s inception in 1996, which is the most out of the four nations. While Finland has recorded the most gold medal wins (nine), Russia has managed five first place finishes, good for second most.

The tournament winner is determined based upon a point system through a round-robin schedule. If two or more teams finish the tournament tied, the result of their head-to-head game acts as the tie-breaker.

KHL play will resume on Nov. 14 following the completion of the tournament.
