Cross another defenseman off the list of potential 2012 NHL trade deadline targets. The Edmonton Oilers signed Andy Sutton to a one-year contract extension on Monday morning, effectively removing him from trade consideration ahead of the Feb. 26 deadline.

His one-year extension will see him earn a base salary of $1.5 million, according to TSN, with games-played bonuses pushing that number up to a potential $1.75 million.
Sutton, 36, is a huge defenseman playing on Edmonton’s bottom pairing at present. He would have been a hot commodity on the trade market if only because of his physical game, something that seems to be in demand this season for a lot of contending teams looking to bulk up on the blueline.
With each player that comes off the market, the deadline market for defensemen gets smaller. That’s only going to raise the price on the few options still available out there.
