NHL Trade Rumors: Ryan Smyth To New York Rangers? Report Says It’s Possible

Ryan Smyth has spent all but five of his 17 NHL seasons with the Edmonton Oilers, but according to a report in the New York Post, there are trade rumors surrounding him, and he could waive his no-movement clause to become a member of the Rangers.

A well-placed source told The Post that Smyth, who was drafted sixth overall in 1994 by [now-Rangers GM Glen] Sather and then played the first five years under his direction while he was general manager of the Oilers, would give serious consideration to waiving his no-move clause in order to pursue a Cup on Broadway.

The Rangers made a minor move on Friday morning, sending forward Erik Christensen, who's been a scratch from John Tortorella's lineup lately, to the Minnesota Wild with a seventh round pick in exchange for AHLer Casey Wellman. It clears up about $925,000 under the cap for Sather's bunch, which would be necessary for any trade. Smyth has the remainder of this year left on his contract at a cap hit of $6.25 million.
