NCAA Hockey Tournament 2012: Cornell’s Strong Defense Hopes To Shut Down Michigan

The Cornell Big Red know a thing or two about shutting teams down. Goaltender Andy Iles had a stretch earlier in the season where he and his defense held their opponents without a goal in five of six games. The team earned their berth in the NCAA tournament with a 3-0 shutout win over Colgate in the ECAC Hockey third-place game in Atlantic City.

The Big Red are also no stranger to overtime, with half of their last 20 games going to the extra session. That could pay off if Iles and the Cornell defense -- which have held opponents to under three goals in nine of their last 10 games -- can keep things close Friday against potent Michigan.

SB Nation Detroit has more coverage of Cornell’s first round game vs. the Wolverines. For more on the road to the Frozen Four in Tampa, stick with our 2012 NCAA hockey tournament StoryStream.
