Frozen Four 2012, Union Vs. Ferris State: Dutchmen Control Second Period Pace, But Score Tied 1-1

Union College controlled most of the second period action against Ferris State in their national semifinal at the 2012 Frozen Four, but after a goal in the first half of the period, the Dutchmen were unable to hold the lead. The teams enter the second intermission tied at 1-1.

Daniel Carr opened the scoring 7:56 into the second period to give the Union College Dutchmen a 1-0 lead. Defenseman Greg Coburn’s blast from the point was deflected in the slot by Carr and snuck over the shoulder of Ferris State Bulldogs goaltender Taylor Nelson to break the scoreless deadlock.

The deflection was particularly impressive as Carr was positioned down on one knee with a defender on his back. Carr was somehow able to get his stick on the puck, just enough to fool Nelson.

Immediately following the goal, though, the Dutchmen failed to grab any momentum thanks to a careless tripping penalty on Ryan Forgaard. Ferris failed to capitalize on the man advantage, but they picked up another power play late in the period.

Cole Ikkala’s charging infraction wasn’t necessarily a bad penalty, as it negated a Bulldogs scoring chance, but on the ensuing power play, a Kyle Bonis shot found the back of the net behind Union goalie Troy Grosenick. The goal was originally awarded to Aaron Schmit, who won a positional battle in front of the net, but was changed to Bonis late in the period. We doubt the Bulldogs care all that much.
